Suddenly, the most bewildered look was plastered on his face. “Where is Nablus?” he asked, “I’ve never heard of it.” Then, after realizing that I knew he was bullshitting me, he pretended to remember, “Ah, Shkheim you mean?”With my insistence not to learn these ugly names that the deranged Zionists have dug up from oblivion to erase our identity, that name certainly didn’t ring a bell. But now it was my turn. Although I knew where he was from, I asked “And you’re… from?” As he smiled while reminding me, I replicated the same look on his face moments ago. “Israel? Where is that?” Then after a brief pause, “Ah, the land of Canaan you mean. Palestine”.
You see if you want to get biblical on me, there is no such thing as Israel either, and I made that clear to this smartass. Here we were all of a sudden; my family descended from a place called Shkheim, and this guy a Palestinian. God does work in mysterious ways, but I still thanked Him for His small mercies that at least my name was not Zaid Shkheimy. “Have a nice day”, I told my Israeli friend. It was in fact a very cold, but still magnificently sunny day to hit the roads. The gloves warmed up my grip on the bike, but my heart was still frozen. I just cannot stand thieves who steal your gloves, or any other kind of thieves.
It was then that it finally occurred to me. Zionism is a sickness, for it takes much more than just a twisted ideology to make people think like that. It requires a profound leap of immorality of a higher order to instill this mentality in your followers. Zionism is not merely a political movement, but in its essence represents a deeply disturbed view of the world, which is a reflection of a terrible disease of the mind.
Indeed, to deny the existence of a vibrant community such as the Palestinian society in the early twentieth century and describe Palestine as “a land without a people for a people without a land” is a disease of the mind.
To assert property claims over real estate after the lapse of more than 2000 years with the same certainty of title as if one resided there yesterday is a disease of the mind.
To describe the colonial immigration to Palestine of a European people with no proven historical link to the ancient Israelites – and whose great, great recorded ancestors have never set foot there – as some kind of a “return” to that land is indicative of a perverted misunderstanding and misapplication of the verb to “return” and can only be a result of a disease of the mind.
To blame the Palestinians for being unreasonable in rejecting a partition plan in 1947 which gave the Jews, who only owned 7 percent of the land, an astonishing half of Palestine, is a disease of the mind.
To demand of the Arabs at the time to peacefully succumb to such partition, where 86 percent of the land designated for the proposed Jewish state was Palestinian-inhabited and owned land, is a disease of the mind.
To eventually grab 78 percent of Palestine through war and to force the flight of the population through deliberate massacres and then call it a war of independence is a disease of the mind.
To deny the orchestrated massacres and eradications of hundreds of Palestinian villages in 1948 and then denounce the Israeli historians who later exposed this truth as self-hating Jews is a disease of the mind.
To claim that having escaped the horrors of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, and Dachau is a justification for the murder, expulsion, and occupation of another guiltless people is a disease of the mind.
To legislate that any resident of Poland, Hungary, New York, Brazil, Australia, Iceland, or even Planet Mars, who happens to be blessed with a Jewish mother (yet cannot point to Palestine on the map) has a superior right to “return” and settle in Palestine to someone who has been expelled from his very own land, confined to a squalid refugee camp, and still holds the keys to his house, is a disease of the mind.
To blame God for the theft and occupation of someone else’s land by claiming that it was He who had pledged this land exclusively to the Jews, and to seriously promote the myth of a land promised by the Almighty to His favorite children as an excuse for this crime, is a disease of the mind.
To milk the pockets of the world for the atrocities of the Nazis, while stubbornly refusing a simple admission of guilt, let alone compensation or repatriation, for the catastrophe that befell the Palestinian people is a disease of the mind.
To keep reminding and blackmailing the world of the plight of the Jews under Hitler 70 years ago, while at the same time inflicting on the Palestinians today the same fate of the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto, is a disease of the mind.
To impose a collective guilt overshadowing Western civilization for the Holocaust and then to criminalize all legitimate historical debate of the nature and extent of that horrific event is a disease of the mind.
To virtually incarcerate the Palestinian people inside degrading cages, destroying their livelihoods, confiscating their lands, stealing their water and uprooting their trees, and then to condemn their legitimate resistance as terrorism is a disease of the mind.
To believe you have the right to chase the Palestinians into an Arab capital city in 1982 and to indiscriminately bombard its civilians for a relentless three months, murdering thousands of innocent people is a disease of the mind.
To encircle the civilian camps of Sabra and Chatila after evacuating the fighters and to unleash on them trained dogs (while providing them with night-illuminating flares for efficiency) and then deny culpability for the carnage is a disease of the mind.
To publicly declare a policy of breaking the bones of Palestinian stone-throwers to prevent them from lifting stones again and to enact this policy is a disease of the mind.
To have the sadistic streak of exacting vengeance on the innocent families of suicide bombers by punishing them with the dynamiting of their home is a disease of the mind.
To describe the offer of giving the Palestinians 80 percent of 22 percent of 100 percent of what is originally their own land as a “generous” offer is a disease of the mind.
To believe that you have the right to continue to humiliate the Palestinians at gun point by making them queue for hours to move between their villages, forcing mothers to give birth at check-points is a disease of the mind.
To flatten the camp of Jenin on its inhabitants and deny any wrongdoing is a delusional condition which is symptomatic of a serious disease of the mind.
To build a huge separation wall under the pretext of security, which disconnects farmers from their farms and children from their schools, while stealing even more territory as the wall freely zigzags and encroaches on Palestinian land is a disease of the mind.
To leave behind, in the last 10 days of a losing war in Lebanon, more than one million cluster bombs which have no purpose except to murder and maim unsuspecting civilians is a product of an evil disease of the mind.
To believe that the entire world is out to get you and to denounce any critic of the racist policies of the State of Israel as an anti-Semite, the latest victim being none other than peace-making Jimmy Carter, is an acute stage of mass paranoia, which is a disease of the mind.
To possess, in the midst of a non-nuclear Arab world, more than 200 nuclear warheads capable of incinerating the whole planet in addition to having the most advanced arsenal of weaponry in the world while continuing to play the role of a victim is a disease of the mind.
Yes, and for that salesman in peaceful Geneva to be so insecure as to refuse to acknowledge the name of the largest West Bank city under his country’s brutal military occupation is, sadly, nothing but an infectious disease of the mind.
That’s all what it is, ladies and gentlemen: Zionism is an incurable disease of the mind.
Take care, and if you ride, do it safely.

Sir. your analysis is full and comprehensive, your diagnosis is correct, the patient is refusing treatment. the prognosis is a catastrophe unless the international community steps in right this very minute. they can start by issuing warrants.
Well, being a retired nurse married to a medical Dr. and a person of deep faith in the intrinsic goodness of all people, I see the battle as one between FUNDAMENTALISM [anyone who has QUIT thinking!] and everyone else who wants to be treated as they treat all others.
Here in USA there are WAY MORE fundie ‘Christians’ who espouse Zionism’s nationalistic tribal lunacy of a supreme race, a more chosen people.
“We have seen the enemy and he is US”-Pogo
The cult of ‘Christian’ Zionism is what the concept of the Anti-Christ is all about:

@bastet – Dear bastet. i must take it upon myself to stand up and protect Mr. hanegbi’s honor. he has NEVER been a zionist, to call him a leftist zionist is a grate insult. his anti -zionist voice was heard loud and clear hours after the fighting had stopped in 1967. and has been a beacon to light a path for many israeli jews out of the clutches of Zionism. his integrity and humanity is beyond reproach
Hi Amos,
Of course Hanegbi was a Zionist and still is fairly Zionist “lite” , despite the binational state espousal, which in itself is a bit suspect. He waffles on the right of return, saying it means “open borders”. He stresses that this doesn’t mean that there will be any scary Palestinians turning up to live in Tel Aviv , but they will be in their own cities (separate but equal!) where they will make “the desert bloom”. Thus he invokes the old Zionist slogan and lie (Palestine was a desert) and also initimates that he’d prefer not to have any inconvenient Palestinian turning up and claiming his house.
“Of the old Yishuv” is how he describes himself, and declares “It’s easier for me [ to be ‘anti-Zionist’} because I never took part in the killing and the dispossession and the occupation” . Dear Haim, your very presence in Palestine (even if you never lifted a gun) from the time of the “Old Yishuv” makes you a member of the vanguard of the Zionist ethnic cleansers, no matter how much you may think it doesn’t. The house you are living in and the land it is on was stolen from Palestinians; the economic benefits you have enjoyed for sixty years were siphoned off from Palestinians both present and departed.
It’s just like the concept of “white privilege” in America. Even if you never murdered native Americans or owned slaves or stole land you must always be mindful the weight of your white privilege and work actively against it — all the benefits that you enjoy have accrued to you not because of anything you did but because of your white skin and what devolved upon historically you from those murderers, thieves and slave-owners.
As for lighting the path for Israeli Jews out of the “clutches of Zionism”, Hanegbi has failed miserably. They say that 94% of israeli Jews supported the recent massacres in Gaza, although I suspect the number is higher. If Hanegbi has been working on this since 1967, he is clearly going to have to work a lot harder than that.
I am ashamed to be a westerner in light of recent action and the predictable and ‘continually’ predictable action that awaits the ‘oppressed’ state of Palestine.
I’m not knee jerking on the profound and word complete article of Zaid Nabulsi regarding the illegality and sickness of the Zionist pogrammatic fractional genocide Israel is constantly enforcing over a protacted period of time. Although I must say, Zaid has completely alluded to every real, credible fact that the western world is completely ignorant of.
In solving the ills of Palestine, I must concede. Unfortunately I see zero hope for a free and ‘back to the way things were Palestine’. As long as every US President (compliments of De Rothchilds influence) acceeds that Israel has the ‘right to exist’ then what hope have Palestinians of ever getting back to the life their ancestory once knew. America will never let Israel be sold out to a dominion status so long as they continue to exert powerful economic influence over the globe.
I really feel bad for the Middle East (I really cannot emphasise how bad I feel) but am powerless, like most logically thinking sickened westerners, to do anything of ‘real’ value. Unfortunatley the world is balanced on a concept of money = strength of disagreement. And I am not wealthy.
A simplistic analogy that I often use to equate Israel: A man gets up from his bar stool (assuming that Zionist Jews were actually there in the first place) but returns to the same pub some weeks later and still lays claim to legitimate right of possession of the stool in question. When the man sitting on the stool disagrees, the proponent summons his friends to help out. The man continues to assume right to his seated place but is met with a barrage of force and objection. He tries again and again to keep what he has acquired but try as he may, he is accused of being an aggressive drunk, a fool and left to pick up the peices of his lost drunken, misdriven world. The clans of hate continue to accumulate until the man is nothing but a pathetic worldly ragdoll. No respect for him because he is dirty (The same view of Islamic people by Westerners) and stupid (The same view of Islamic people by westerners). The man stumbles out of the pub beaten and battered and is perceived as a complete pschychotic trouble maker. His aggressors come out unscathe and adorned. Picture perfect!
You see, its so easy for the West to be philosophical about the carnage of others not on their own doorstep and philosphical about why Israel is just in ‘defending’ herself when its not their own beloved children being carried out in body bags with sickening infant wounds. A crazy and demonic solution in one side of the world is a just and Godly resolution in the other.
@bastet – I stand corrected. neither me ,nor i suspect Mr. hanegbi, live in an ethically pristine world …..
This is great. I really enjoyed reading this and it makes a perfect sense.
What else will we consider Zionism if not a terminal, self-destruct, psychotic disease? It is indeed a political, brainwashing, deceiving, fake-nationalist movement. But it IS a product of the sick mind.
Probably it resists treatment because its only cure is amputation. And this is an inevitable event.
Thanks, Mr. Nabulsi.
Mr. Nabulsi – Your article, “Zionism is an incurable disease of the mind,” is brilliant, witty, engrossing, angry, sad. You’ve made so many points, necessary, powerfully, and wrote it all in various tones. You’ve expressed it eloquently and not eloquently. You are a joy to read, an enlightening joy.
Thank you.
Thank you Mr Nabulsi. Very refreshing to the memory of those who seem to have amnesia.
What is happening seems to be out of time!
While the willful people have started destroying walls and social barriers in an attempt to beautify the ugly face of the world inherited from 19th and 20th centuries, Israel, the rogue state, is still reiterating the same logic of power that has been prevailing over that long period.
Israel’s governing glutton thugs collected from nowhere are still fattening by sucking the blood of the grandchildren of their alleged German ‘oppressors’ and lingering the historical falsehood of the ‘HOLY COST’ to steal more and more lands, build longer and longer walls and infringe more and more UN resolutions.
By using their panoply of forbidden lethal weaponry over Gaza lately, Zionists have crossed the lines. They have targeted the very existence of the coming generation of Palestinians who, to the Zionists’ great delight, will be maimed, disfigured and impotent. With the phosphorous weapons, DIME rockets and others… Israel is trying to reestablish a balance – that has never been in its favour- that of population. Is that much different from dropping a nuclear bomb on towns, the very-near history tells us about?
It is true that some surnames indicate the locality where the family originated. So the many Jewish family names like Moskowitz, Warshawsky, Minsky, Litvin, Berlner, etc., should tell us where these people belong–certainly not in places like Nablus and Filasteen!
@Halina Minadeo -” some surnames indicate the locality where the family originated” – The problem is that for Jews to change their (first and/or last) names is as natural as for the goyim to change clothes…
Excellent! I agree with the writer.
@Irish –
Win or lose, it’s all about at least standing for the right. That is winning. I will never give up and I am a westerner. Can’t do a blasted thing about Palestine or any other part of the world. But stand for what is right. It’s Palestine, not Israel and I will never think or speak otherwise.
So let me get this correct Zaid. Humans beings across this planet of who were not the descendant of Abraham decided to convert to the most oppressed and attacked Religion in Human history. In the eyes of God 2000 years is just a blink.
