On the occasion of the June 2009 European elections, we are launching an urgent appeal to all candidates for the 736 seats in the European parliament.
We ask that they actively pursue the immediate and unconditional removal of Hamas and all other Palestinian liberation organizations from the European list of proscribed terrorist organizations. We further ask that they acknowledge the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and, by so doing, recognise, Hamas as a legitimate voice for the Palestinian people’s aspirations for national liberation.

The other Resistance organization, Hizb’Allah, which is classified only by the US, Canada and Israel – amongst the 190 members of the UN – should also be addressed.

Mary. Thank you. As a former soldier, and international legal consultant, I believe that ALL people under foreign military occupation have the absolute right to use whatever means they have including military means and use of guns and weapons to resist foreign occupation. The French did it, the Dutch did it, the American did it, the Vietnamese did it, the Norwegians did it, the Russian did it, the Algerian did it, the Greeks did it, the Moroccan did it, and even the Jews did it when they engaged in military activities against the British in Mandated Palestine. As such the Palestinians should not be an exception to the rule, simply because the Occupiers are Israeli Jews, and the Israeli Military and Settler Occupation should not be an exception. The Palestinians have every right whether the US, Israel or Western Europe like it or not to use military means to resist and fight the Jewish Occupation. However my only objection and exception to this right is the use of suicide bombings that target civilians, Israeli civilians within the Green Line in hotels, in restaurants and on buses. Armed Jewish Settlers even though they may not wear the military uniforms are not exempted and should not be counted as unarmed civilians. They are enemy combatant. All Israeli soldiers, all armed Jewish settlers any where in the Occupied West Bank and Gaza are at risk. Having said that, one has to consider, what kind of resistance is the most effective one. I think in this case, and in particular in Occupied Palestine, I think armed resistance is not only futile, but will not work. I think what is needed is a massive civil consistent uprising that will drive both Israel and the Palestinian Authority mad, and this massive peaceful resistance should stay on including general strikes until such time Israel decide to leave on its own, which it will never, or until such time the UN intervene and send it its own troops to replace the Israeli military occupation and keep the peace. I do think that Hamas continued policy of using Qassam rockets is stupid, senseless and of no military value or effect and it will do them much better to use the money they spend on these useless rockets to feed the poor and hungry in Gaza. Suicide bombing must not be part of the Palestinians strategy of resistance and targeting civilians must not part of our fight. Let the other side commit these murderous acts.
Hi Sami,
you make many good points, most of which deserve more attention than I can momentarily dedicate to them, but I am sure other well-informed people will have input.
My view is that Hamas has been attacked not so much as a military, militant or resistance force, but as a political force. In painting them as merely “guns” and never “roses” they have allowed the collective conscience to paint upon them the dangerous (to others and themselves) label. This is undoubtedly a planned and instrumental thing so that the legitimate requests and the legitimate political aspirations of Palestinians are in some way polluted or pushed out.
That Hamas will never beat Israel in armed struggle is clear. They don’t have the means to even compete, and this is more reason to allow them to develop as a political group that is able to manage their own operations.
I do not believe they are behind most (if any at all) of the Qassam launches, which are in essence like you say, just bad PR. So bad are they, why would they not actually be things that Israel itself would manoeuvre? I believe that there is NOTHING that is beneath Israel, as facts demonstrate. Every time I look at this site, I see the damage they have caused, UNANSWERED and unchecked. They are indeed the ones to be banned from all society, their ignoble military apparatus in primis. I think that the operations that are qualified in the mass media as terrorism are not all terrorism and some of the worst I believe are either individuals who have reached an understandable level of saturation or they are plants. This is my view and I can’t shake it. I don’t think Hamas is in any way as unable to understand this as the press depicts them. If you read the interview with Meshaal, you can see that he is entirely reasonable. There is nothing he states that can in any way be depicted as inciting terrorism or in giving up legitimate struggle. He wants to operate within law. Israel never has and never does, and this is why they point the finger.
I believe Palestinians have tried some with peaceful resistance, and they get bullets. They get walls. They are held and arrested. Just look at the settlers who are raiding in the West Bank. If the tables were turned, this would be FRONT PAGE NEWS!! It would be called with the name it is: Terrorism, Pogrom, Racial Violence.
All we can do, all we are required to do, is support the resistance in every way we can. With words, with actions, with our communication to all and sundry that there has been a brainwashing that has taken place, and the good guys and bad guys are NOT who we have been told. We know why.
If they keep Hamas, Hezbollah, PFLP on the list, it just is as a favour to Israel, not because they are terrorists. We have to support truth, constantly. Long live the resistance, long live it until Palestine is free.
Mary, of course listing Hamas, Hezbollah as terrorist organizations is only to accommodate Israel, which in my mind, the major and key terrorist state in the entire world. No doubt the majority of Hamas and Hezbollah activities are related to community service, providing a service that the “state” whether Lebanon or the Palestinian Authority simply failed to provide. Services to the people that are badly needed. I was in my home town of El-Bireh when Hamas took over Gaza and few hundred yards there was a service organization called “Alkhansa’a” with million dollars funding from the ruler of Dubai. The gangs from Fatah burned it to the ground that same night. However I do hold the political leadership of Hamas responsible for the reckless behavior of those “militants” in Gaza who for the most part are only serving Israel. When the state fails to deliver expected services, then one should expect organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah to step in and fill the gab. The political leadership is the one that should be in charge, not the militias. I do not consider Hamas or Hezbollah terrorist organizations, simply because Israel considers them so. If there are terrorist organizations, the IDF and the Jewish Settlers qualify fit the description. However I do not consider a suicide bomber a “martyr: either.
thanks a lot .
